There are times in life when we’re not sure how to support those who are closest to us. When a friend experiences an unexpected pregnancy, we want to encourage them, but how? Here are a few tips to help you support them.
Listen Without Judgment
When hearing about a friend’s struggle, it can be difficult not to have an opinion. Resist the temptation to offer advice or to judge.
Sometimes, our friends just need someone to talk to. They need to know you are trustworthy, and they can confide in you.
Offer Advice Only When Asked
Rather than giving advice, ask questions instead. Whenever possible, also try to offer assistance. Ask her, “Have you told your parents?” If she hasn’t, ask if she would like you to go with her when she does.
Ask your friend if she has confirmed her pregnancy with a pregnancy test and ultrasound. If she says “no,” ask if you can accompany her.
Only offer advice when she asks for your opinion. You don’t want to tell her what to do. How she handles her unplanned pregnancy needs to be her decision alone.
Show Extra Kindness
Your friend will most likely experience physical and emotional changes during the early days and weeks of pregnancy. Early pregnancy symptoms include morning sickness, fatigue, and mood changes.
Be sure to show her some extra kindness at this time. Here are some things you might consider doing:
- Have her favorite meal delivered.
- Take her some flowers.
- Help her do everyday tasks, like laundry, washing, or cleaning.
- Do her grocery shopping.
- Treat her to a movie or evening out if she feels up to it.
- Go for a walk.
By doing those everyday chores, you’re showing your friend you are with her through it all. Ask how you can help her, but get creative if she doesn’t respond.
Encourage Her to Get Answers
Is your friend aware experts estimate that 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage? Because it takes a woman’s body time to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, it’s possible to get a positive pregnancy test result even though she may no longer be pregnant.
